Please excuse the indelicate nature of this picture. We are reminded about the story of the man who invented cat's eyes for the road; apparently he did so because he saw a cat coming towards him while he was driving at night, and if the cat had been walking in the opposite direction he would have invented the pencil sharpner.

Reychan, Stanislas

Stanislas Reychan was born in Vienna in 1897. His father was Polish and his mother Austrian. His work took him to England during the Second World War and he stayed.

After the war he became interested in pottery and studied at the Central School of Art under Dora Billington. He opened his own studio in 1950 and potted until he was eighty-eight. He was widely respected and exhibited, and won a silver medal in 1960 at the Paris Salon.
